SPCA Promises A Sweet Day For Humans And Animals

Cupcake Day celebrations planned across New Zealand

Right across the country, from Cape Reinga to the Bluff, a sweet time is promised on Monday 30th August, when the SPCA marks its second annual Cupcake Day.

Thousands of varieties of delicious, mouth-watering cupcakes will be on sale in streets, shopping malls, farmers' markets and other venues, thanks to the hard work and passion of inspired individuals, schools, teams and businesses.

"All the funds raised by Cupcake Day will be used by local SPCA Centres to help their work on behalf of animals. So it will be a sweet day for both animals and humans," says the SPCA's Fundraising and Sponsorship Manager, Cressida Evans.

"Last year's inaugural SPCA Cupcake Day was a huge success. New Zealanders are obviously warming to the idea and we're starting to notice a significant increase in cupcake cooks registering to take part in this year's event, with stalls and other promotions organised for cities and towns, large and small across the country," she adds.

The celebrations are to include competitions for the most creative cupcake, the most extreme place to eat a cupcake, the most cupcakes baked and the most money raised, with separate winners for the '12 and under' and 'Over 13' categories and prizes donated by Mt Vintage, Hasbro, Ecostore, The Bodyshop, Lincoln Limousines and Kiwi Cakes.

As New Zealand's principal animal welfare charity, the SPCA relies heavily on public donations to raise a nationwide operating budget of more than $14 million a year.

"The truly great thing about Cupcake Day is that we can all have a lot of fun, enjoy succulent cupcakes galore and know that we're helping make New Zealand a better, safer and more caring place for the animals we love," says Cressida Evans.
