Walking The Talk

Equestrian Sports New Zealand endurance high performance leader Madonna Harris has finished third in the grueling 1000-kilometre Mongol Derby.

Aucklander Harris led for a number of days and remained in contention for most of the race but in the end had to settle behind American Justin Nelsen, who finished just a few lengths ahead of runner-up two-time derby veteran Saskia van Heeren from South Africa.

The winners, who finished at a gallop over the last 300-odd metres, took eight days to complete the 1000-kilometres. They rode the entire race together.

According to race organisers, Kiwi Harris was feeling just fine.

“I'm doing really well actually. I'm not anywhere near as sore as I thought I might be.”

Probably not a surprising comment from the woman who has represented New Zealand at top level at a number of challenging and physically demanding tough sports, including cross country skiing, cycling and athletics.

“I'm in very good spirits and feel that, well, if it went for another couple of days I could certainly cope with it. I have enjoyed the last four days in particular – the scenery has been magnificent.”

Harris will head the New Zealand endurance team to the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky next month.

The Mongol Derby is based on Chinggis Khaan's (also known as Genghis Khan) legendary postal system which could relay messages thousands of miles in a matter of days. Competitors have 10 days to cover the course aboard local horses.
