Fashion and Beauty students are turning news into fashion
when they create garments for the Twilight at Te Manawa
event this Friday.
Two groups of five Certificate in
Fashion, Health and Beauty Level 3 students will use only
recycled newspaper, staples, tape and glue to construct
their designs.
UCOL Fashion lecturer Sheran Merritt says
the teams have two hours of frantic cutting, folding and
sticking before their creations go on display for visitors
to the Twilight event.
Level 1 Certificate in Fashion and Beauty students used mountains of newspapers earlier this month to craft their fashion designs in newsprint.
Twilight at Te Manawa marks the launch of the Science of Fashion exhibition which runs until 24 October at Te Manawa Art Gallery. The exhibition will feature guest speakers, fashion displays and activities.
UCOL Fashion students
will also share their skills with budding designers during
an afternoon Recycled Wearable Arts Workshop on 9 October at
Te Manawa Art Gallery. “The workshop is open to 10 – 15
year olds,” says Sheran. “They will work in groups with
the guidance of our students, to design, construct and model
their garments which will be made totally from recyclable
materials.”
