Iwi Stations Reach Agreement With Music Licensing Body

Maori music charts to be established

Maori artists and labels who are PPNZ members can now receive royalties for the broadcast of their music on iwi stations.

Following an agreement between PPNZ and Te Māngai Pāho (TMP), royalties are now paid to artists and labels that create and control music playing on the country’s 21 iwi radio stations.

PPNZ represents the copyright owners of sound recordings and TMP is the MaoriBroadcasting Funding Agency.

The agreement also means an Iwi Radio Chart can be determined by regular collection of playlist data supplied by individual stations to independent chart company Radioscope.

PPNZ Managing Director Kristin Bowman says it is great news for Maoriartists that couldn’t come at a better time.

“We are proud to announce this during national MaoriLanguage Week - iwi stations are an incredibly important part of radio here in New Zealand and it is only right that Maoriartists benefit from their music being played on those stations.

“The creation of a MaoriChart also adds greater depth to the local music landscape and promises to be a great tool to support and encourage both Maoriartists and Maoribroadcasters.

“We are incredibly grateful of the support and co-operation from TMP and the iwi broadcasters’ association Te Whakaruruhau o Nga Reo Irirangi Maori. We look forward to releasing the first MaoriChart, when playlist data is received, in the coming weeks.”

Singer/songwriter Hinewehi Mohi says it’s appropriate in this week of celebration of the Maorilanguage that Maoriartists and waiata Maoribe given this recognition.

“It’s great to have a broadcast medium like iwi radio for artists recording kaupapa Maorimusic; this royalty agreement will provide the support needed for artists who continue their commitment to promote te reo Maorithrough their music and convey important messages as inspiration to younger generations.”
