NZ International Taekwon-Do Champions clean up at ITF Asian Tournament
New Zealand’s top Taekwon-do athletes hauled in the medals at this weeks ITF Asian Taekwon-do Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
The 15 member Kiwi team from International Taekwon-Do won 18 gold, nine Silver and three bronze titles.
New Zealand is ranked number 2 in the world behind Argentina in the sport.
New Zealand Coach Steve Pellow says the performance of the New Zealand team in Vietnam means that they have a real shot at becoming the top country at the 2011 World Championships being held in Wellington New Zealand next March.
“New Zealand has dominated the Asian tournament and all eyes will be on the kiwis at the World Championships next year to be number one,” says Pellow.
The team have also been consistently at the top of their game at two other recent international tournaments.
“ New Zealand finished second overall in Jamaica at the ITF Taekwon-Do Gold Cup and New Zealand star Carl van Roon was also second in the recent US Open during the ESPN “ Night of the Stars Competition “.
“The team is on fire and we are looking to do New Zealand proud at the World Championships in Wellington next year,” says Pellow.
