Tots and Toddlers course translated into Te Reo Maori

This Maori Language Week Plunket is launching the first Tots and Toddlers early childhood unit ‘Demonstrate knowledge of the needs of young children’ in Te Reo Maori.

Tots & Toddlers - the next generation is the first of Plunket’s NZQA recognised units delivered within secondary schools to be fully translated into Maori.

The unit teaches students in Year 11, 12 and 13 the basic needs of young children and is used nationally within a number of subject areas including Health and Physical Education, Gateway, Transition, Psychology and Childcare. It offers a unique learning experience based on theory, practice and independent student research as well as practical hands-on experience with Plunket volunteer parents and their children in the classroom.

Sue Grant, Plunket National Parenting Advisor said the courses are designed under the parenting education umbrella and aim to give secondary students the confidence and knowledge to deal with young children in a safe and responsible way.

“It is important that Plunket provides relevant and accessible education in schools. which helps students to understand the needs and development stages of young children. It is important that our young people are aware of the responsibilities of being a parent, the role they can play in looking after children and in becoming better sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles and friends.”

The success of this course would help to determine future translations of other Plunket provided units
