A Chip Off the Old Block Worth Hundreds of Dollars

A Chip Off the Old Block Worth Hundreds of Dollars

The Trade Me auction of a box called Chip is attracting on line attention.

“Chip” is a pine box who has offered himself and his ten brand new contents (ranging in value from $14-$180) for auction to help the Malvern Scout Troup raise money to take 28 girls and boys to a Jamboree at the end of the year in Hamilton.

On his recent world travels, Chip collected 10 brand new objects that can be used in the great outdoors. Photo’s of Chip in well known international locations will help bidders guess what the top quality items are.

Scout mum and Malvern’s “media liaison” Jo Downey says the clues are just a bit of fun and anyone can bid for “Chip”.

“Chip’s 10 items have been kindly donated by sponsors (you can see the sponsors on the auction page) and we have taken photos and put together a list of cryptic clues for each item. We are following through on our magical theme with Chip having travelled the world gathering the items under the theme of “be prepared”,” she says.

The “magical theme” is a reference to Malvern Scout’s Magic Button which sold last month on Trade Me after a large amount of national and international interest. The auction received almost 40,000 hits and had hundreds of watchers. The “magic” button was said to have once been owned by James Cook, borrowed by astronaut Neil Armstrong and passed on to a NZ scout group by Lord Baden Powell.

This auction has truly been a joint effort amongst a group of enthusiastic scout parents.
“The original idea came from scouts mum, Suzie Yates. The lovely story, written from the “Chips” point of view was put together by Suzie’s husband Geoff Postlethwaite, Gavin Holley built the box (and 4 of its’ siblings) at his joinery business, Mike Foubister and Toni Smith took and “photoshopped” the photos and Angela Foubister came up with the idea of the box travelling the world,” says Jo.
