Maori Television Media Advisory

The Chief Executive of Maori Television, Jim Mather, will undertake a three-month period of professional development from Monday June 28 to Friday September 17 2010.

Mr Mather has been studying part-time for a PhD in Maori Economic Development with AUT University for the past two years. The focus of his research is: ‘The role of economic development in building successful and effective iwi and urban Maori organisations’.

The study leave will enable him to focus solely on his PhD studies full-time for three months, primarily based at the Institute of Public Policy – a faculty of AUT University. His supervisors are Professor Ian Shirley and Associate Professor Pare Keiha.

Mr Mather says it is challenging to maintain a balance between work, family and study. “This period of professional development will enable me to make considerable progress with my studies whilst also providing a period to recharge from my initial five year period of employment with Maori Television.”

The Chairman of the Board of Maori Television, Garry Muriwai, says he is very supportive of staff undertaking professional development opportunities. “I look forward to the wider, long term benefits that Jim’s PhD studies will provide to our organisation,” Mr Muriwai says.

Maori Television General Manager of Sales, Marketing and Communications, Sonya Haggie, will be acting Chief Executive of Maori Television during Mr Mather’s absence.
