Volunteer Award won by StarJam Dad
Darryl Pascoe was announced the winner of the 2010 Intrepid Travel Volunteer Awards last night at a presentation ceremony held at St Matthews in the City church. Darryl a key volunteer for StarJam was chosen out of 21 finalists. The evening was hosted by Te Radar and the award presented by the Honourable Tariana Turia, Minister for Community and Voluntary Sector.
Bonnie Pascoe, Darryl’s 15 year daughter who has cerebral palsy, has been involved with StarJam for five years. Darryl who is Bonnie’s sole parent provides voluntary assistance for shows, gigs and other StarJam events taking on responsibilities ranging from managing microphones back stage to setting up halls for regular community events.
“StarJam is lucky to have over 50 committed
volunteers and we would have loved to nominate them all.”
said CEO and Founder Julie Bartlett. “We chose Darryl
because he just does what needs to be done without asking
him and he’s the kind of guy who would take off his coat
in an instance and wrap it around any shivering child.
He’s a very humble guy. We couldn’t do what we do
without the selfless work of people like Darryl.” Darryl
who didn’t even cast a vote for himself, attracted nearly
500 votes out of a total of 7000 made online for all the
nominees.
Apart from one brief trip to Australia as a teenager Darryl has never travelled outside New Zealand. He wins a $5000 travel prize with Intrepid Travel and StarJam receives a cash and advertising package to the value of $10,000.
