From farmyard to catwalk

Tractor parts, fencing wire and shearing combs are just a few of the items to grace the catwalk later this month at the 2010 National Fieldays Ag Art Wear Competition.

Ag Art Wear, sponsored by HRV and NZ Landcare Trust, challenges designers of all skill levels to create ‘wearable art’ garments from materials and items used on the farm.

“It’s a real challenge to come up with a garment that only uses materials off the farm yet is still fashionable but every year the entries seem to get even more creative. It’s an exciting event and one we’re very proud to support,” said Amy Stewart, Director, HRV Waikato.

There are four key categories for the 2010 Ag Art Wear Competition – Avant Garde, Landcare Awareness, Designer-Traditional and Under 21 – with a total of $13,000 in cash prizes.

The competition is now in its 16th year with entrants continuously pushing the boundaries of wearable art – 2009’s Under 21 winner, Rebecca Jones from Matamata College, entered a garment entitled ‘Tractor Factor’ made entirely from tractor parts.

Judges for this year’s competition include Marion Manson from Arts Post, Robyn Brooks designer of Ooby Ryn, Barry Quayle from NZ National Fieldays and Monica Peters from Landcare Trust.

The Ag Art Wear show will take place in the Ag Art Wear Theatre at 11am and 2pm daily throughout the National Feildays – 16 to 19 June, Mystery Creek Events Centre, Hamilton.
