Call for New Zealanders to support tree planting

Call for New Zealanders to support tree planting
Arbor Day – Saturday 5 June

Saturday 5 June marks Arbor Day worldwide and the New Zealand Arboricultural Association (NZAA) Inc is calling on Kiwis around the country to support tree planting and appropriate tree care.

The NZAA is running a number of tree planting activities across the country, and the not-for-profit organisation is also encouraging appropriate tree planting and maintenance.

“Many people think planting a tree is as straight forward as digging a hole and putting a tree in it,” says Rick Mexted, NZAA President. “Trees are a lifetime investment – how well your tree, and investment, grows depends on the type of tree and location selected for planting, the care provided when the tree is planted, and the follow-up care after planting.”

The NZAA recommends some simple steps to tree planting, including digging a shallow broad planting hole so the roots have room to establish, and ensuring the tree is placed at an appropriate height. Once in the ground, it is important to fill the hole gently but firmly pack the soil around the base and settle with water. Trees can be staked if necessary and it is recommended to mulch the base of the tree as this acts as a blanket to hold moisture and helps control soil temperature.

“Obviously we can’t control weather conditions but proper handling during planting and further routine care, such as regular watering during the hot months, will help a tree grow and thrive,” says Rick.

“Trees are a valuable asset to any landscape and provide a long-lasting source of beauty and enjoyment for people of all ages so it’s worth taking the time.”

The NZAA also encourages New Zealanders to consider trees in their environment and to contact a professional NZAA accredited arborist to assist with any tree related questions.

“An arborist can determine the type of tree care, such as pruning, that is necessary to improve the health, appearance, and safety of your trees,” says Rick. “A professional arborist can provide the services of a trained crew, with all of the required safety equipment and liability insurance.”

Rick adds: “Arbor Day is an excellent opportunity to take stock of your trees and plan for the future – inspect your trees, check for broken branches or evidence of disease or insect infection, visit your local nursery to see what’s available and even plant a tree.”
