Becomes the Youngest Comic to Ever Walk Away with the
Towel!
Rhys Mathewson capped off an incredible NZ International Comedy Festival by picking up this country’s most prestigious comedy award at last night’s star studded Last Laugh, which was held at the SKYCITY Theatre and was hosted by the first lady of NZ comedy, Michele A’Court
Rhys Mathewson won the Billy T Award with his show RHYSPECT, at the tender age of 19 he has become the youngest comic to ever be bestowed the Billy T award and has joined the “who’s who” of New Zealand’s comedy crop. The famous yellow towel isn’t the only prize – Mathewson has also picked up a cool $5000 to help with furthering his career in the comedy industry and a guest appearance on TV 3’s 7 Days.
The Billy T Nominees which included Clayton Carrick Leslie, Jarred Fell, TJ McDonald, Vaughan King and of course Rhys Mathewson were all judged by five industry professionals who were looking for the comedian that showed outstanding potential throughout the festival, the Billy T’s are an initiative of the New Zealand Comedy Trust; with the aim of ensuring continued growth of live comedy in New Zealand.
Wilson Dixon became the latest recipient of the coveted FRED Award (a gumboot…). Named in honour of ex-pat comedian John Clarke THE FRED AWARD heralds those that have a recognized career in NZ Comedy and are ready to unleash their talent on the international scene. Wilson Dixon takes home a $3000 international travel voucher to assist in delivering great kiwi comedy to the world stage.
