MEDIA RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NZ Musicians Feature in International Baroque Ensemble Concerts in May
Eight New Zealand musicians will join internationally-renowned violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch and The Wallfisch Band for a four-centre concert tour this month as part of Chamber Music New Zealand's 2010 Kaleidoscope concert season.
The international baroque ensemble opens its ‘Venetian Carnival’ concert tour in Wellington on Thursday 20 May, followed by concerts in Napier, Hamilton and Auckland.
Led by Elizabeth Wallfisch, The Wallfisch Band are baroque music specialists and their programme for the New Zealand concerts will transport audiences to the magic and mystery of 18th century Venice with the vibrant music of Italian composers Locatelli and Vivaldi.
Joining the four-members of The Wallfisch Band in New Zealand will be Auckland violinists Miranda Hutton and Fiona Haughton, Hamilton violinist Lara Hall, Dunedin’s James Andrewes (violin) and Wellington musicians Kate Goodbehere (violin), Shelley Wilkinson (viola), Emma Goodbehere (cello) and Richard Hardie (double bass).
The Wallfisch Band are known for their commitment to developing baroque musicians around the world and the New Zealand tour includes a week-long residency at the University of Auckland with open rehearsals, workshops and masterclasses.
“Our musicians have the joy of discovery, and of re-creation, and through this process we learn so much: how to play together, to build an orchestra, to become friends and colleagues,” says Elizabeth Wallfisch. “We share the wonders in the music, become polished in our exaction and play to our audiences in living, breathing performances.”
The Wallfisch Band perform ‘Venetian Carnival’ at Wellington Town Hall on Thursday 20 May, at the Century Theatre in Napier on Friday 21 May, Hamilton’s WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts on Sunday 23 May and Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE on Monday 24 May.
Chamber Music New Zealand’s Kaleidoscopes Concert Season 2010, celebrating its Diamond Anniversary, continues in June/July with 2009 Michael Hill International Violin Competition winner Josef Špaček, Britain’s Doric String Quartet with pianist Piers Lane in September, The Song Company in October and closes with ‘Schubertiade’, a special 60th birthday celebration concert with the New Zealand String Quartet and Michael Houstoun featuring three favourite works by Schubert.
