Whole Lotta Laughs Set To barrel Through Welly
Whole Lotta Laughs Set To barrel Through Welly
The City of Wellington loves a good laugh. We’ve got the stats to prove it, and the Comedy Commute to kick it off.
The 2010 New Zealand International Comedy Festival hits town on Sunday 25 April, with the fast-selling First Laughs gala showcase.
Last year’s figures show that we shrugged off recession blues with one of our biggest turn-outs in the history of the event. In 2009, Wellington attendance figures for the three-week Festival rose from 18,939 in 2008 to 31,399, a staggering 66 per cent increase.
With a strong line-up of local and international comedy stars, the 2010 New Zealand International Comedy Festival is looking more than revolutionary for the Capital’s entertainment needs over the next three weeks.
And kicking things off next Thursday is the return of the Comedy Commute – new and improved!
From 8am to 9am Thursday 22 April, Wellington’s finest comedians will be hurling the hilarity from three key commuter spots, offering barbs, one-liners – and giveaways including tickets to comedy shows and whatever else we can throw. Get a laugh on your way to work!
The Comedy Commute will be happening outside Wellington Railway Station, Manners Mall and Lambton Quay adjacent to the Old Bank Arcade. Just look for the More FM and The Rock radio trucks and listen for the laughter.
Tickets for First Laughs, the event that officially launches the Wellington leg of the Festival, are flying out the door. Hosted by the star of TV3’s ‘7Days’ Ben Hurley, the line-up includes international headliners Jason Cook (UK), Zoe Lyons (UK), Maeve Higgins (Ireland), Miles Jupp (UK), Jarlath Regan (Ireland), and Wilson Dixon (USA).
Who are joined by Wellington’s own award winning comics, Steve Wrigley, Dai Henwood and Sarah Harpur, alongside local comedy star El Jaguar. The strong line up has also been bolstered by the addition of comedy coherts Jarred Christmas (UK/NZ), Jeremy Elwood (NZ), Chris Brain (NZ), Jamie Bowen (NZ) and Jan Maree (NZ).
