Go Girls Virginity Map a Hit with Fans
Whether it is recalled with fondness or with a cringe, fans of Go Girls, a drama series on TV2, are taking to the internet in droves to share memories of their own ‘first time’ via the Go Girls Virginity Map, developed by AIM Proximity for TVNZ.
The Virginity Map http://tvnz.co.nz/virginitymap invites fans to relive the moment (using an alias if they want to remain anonymous) by posting a virtual ‘pin’ to show where it happened, plus commentary on how it went. Viewers can zoom around the map the way they would with Google maps and easily see the most popular cities and suburbs or the most often selected “settings” such as a beach, car or bedroom.
In just over a week since it launched the map of New Zealand is now covered in pins, and accompanying comments. The average user session duration is at a healthy two and a half minutes.
TV2 Marketing Manager Aimee Glucina said the campaign is a tongue-in-cheek way for fans of the series to engage with the show and one of its many storylines.
“We gave AIM Proximity a brief that asked for an engaging way to allow fans to get to know the characters and interact with the show. It was really important that the idea captured the fun, flirty nature of the show but in a harmless and inoffensive way. We talked at length about the stories, secrets and scandals that best friends like Britta, Amy, Cody and Kev share - and the idea of Virginity Map was born. We know it is a little risqué, but so is the show.”
AIM Proximity Creative Director Michael Barnfield said Go Girls is extremely popular with women in their 30’s - even more so than the age group that is portrayed in the programme.
“All of us can remember our first time, even if the experience might be one that we’d prefer to forget. Our idea enables women who are fans of Go Girls to do what the characters love to do – share a little intimate knowledge about themselves. For these viewers the website becomes more of an element of nostalgia, and we’ve found that our female audience (and plenty of men too) are only too willing to relive their “first time” now that the memory is at a safe distance.”
Glucina said the feedback has been fantastic so far, not only from the fans but the makers of the show.
“South Pacific Pictures, the makers of the show, responded brilliantly to the idea and got right in behind it. The writers even provided the background for each of the core characters, so you can find out where they lost their virginity on the map too - a great way for our fans to interact further with Britta, Amy, Cody and Kev.”
To register a pin, users have to submit their birth date and can only proceed if they are over the legal age limit.
Go Girls screens Thursdays at 8.30pm on TV2. Season 2 started on 18 March and runs for 13 weeks. The episodes that have already gone to air are available to view free on TVNZ Ondemand.
