A joint exhibition at Auckland’s Lane Gallery is the latest success in a string of achievements for a graduate and current student from Northec’s Kerikeri campus.
NorthTec Bachelor of Applied Arts student Sue Hawker and NorthTec graduate Lee Brogan are showcasing their sculptural glass art at Auckland’s Lane Gallery until 17 April in an exhibition entitled “Crush: Pâte de Verre”.
The exhibition demonstrates two approaches to the medium of sculptural glass art and is billed as “bringing this ancient technique into the new millennium.”
The Lane Gallery exhibition is the latest addition to a long line of creative credits earned by Sue and Lee over recent years.
Lee’s work is currently part of a curated, national exhibition “Looking Glass: Reflecting Ideas” featuring 21 New Zealand glass artists that has been on display at the Sargeant Gallery in Whanganui for the three months and is currently being transferred to Pataka Museum and Gallery in Porirua. She also won the prestigious Molly Morpeth Canaday Glass Award in 2008.
“I’ve been constantly exhibiting, entering competitions and working since graduating with my degree from NorthTec in 2007,” said Lee. “I’m also working as a publisher at the same time.”
Sue began her studies at NorthTec’s Kerikeri campus in 2003 and has since launched a notable career in glass arts and ceramics.
Last year two pieces of her glass art were accepted amongst the finalists for the prestigious Ranamok Prize for Contemporary Glass – Australia and New Zealand.
A piece of her ceramic art was also purchased by the James Wallace Trust for its collection after she entered it for the James Wallace Awards.
Sue is continuing her studies this year under renowned ceramicist and NorthTec tutor at the Kerikeri campus, Richard Parker.
