Fourth WPSSA Summer Sports Day a great success

Media release:

Fourth annual WPSSA Summer Sports Day a great success

More than 1200 primary school students took part in the annual Whangarei Primary Schools Sports Association Summer Sports Day at Kensington Park, Whangarei yesterday. .

Hosting the event is part of a year-long event management paper offered to NorthTec Sport and Recreation students in the second year of their studies for a Diploma in Sport and Recreation.

The year 4 to year 6 students came from all over the Whangarei district to enjoy a fun-filled day participating in a variety of summer sports including newcombe ball, tennis, league tag, long ball, non-stop cricket, and tee ball.
This is the fourth year that NorthTec Sport and Recreation students have hosted the event at Kensington Park.

The WPSSA Summer Sports Day is one of four events hosted by NorthTec Sport and Recreation students throughout the year. The other events are the WPSSA Intermediate Winter Sports Day, WPSSA Cross Country and Northland Primary Schools Cross Country.

“We try to make it a practical, hands-on experience for our students,” said NorthTec Sport and Recreation tutor Bobby Newport. “Our students learn how to organise and manage people and because it’s a real world experience they gain a much deeper understanding that if we simply taught the paper in the classroom.”

NorthTec is the Tai Tokerau (Northland) region's largest provider of tertiary education, with campuses and learning centres in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Rāwene, Dargaville, Kaikohe and Kaitaia. NorthTec also has over 60 community-based delivery points from Coatesville in rural Rodney to Ngataki in the Far North.
