Jigsaw says Children’s Day should be a way of life

Jigsaw Family Services is calling for the celebration that is Children’s Day to become a way of life, and not just one day.

This Sunday is the 10th annual Children’s Day, where organisations throughout the country are running special events and activities for parents and children.
Jigsaw’s Deputy Chair, Hera Clarke, is encouraging parents to remember the simple things, like spending time with children, is what they crave.

“The way in which we enjoy children should become a way of life, not just something that happens on one day. But sadly the reality is that is not always the way it pans out, with reports of child abuse rising.”

Jigsaw also wants to acknowledge that being a parent can be quite hard at times. It can be frustrating and stressful, but is also extremely rewarding. We ask that through all the difficulties that you may be experiencing please focus on how we can help our children to flourish.

“Children look up to their parents as role models. Every day could be the day when they are inspired to spark their dreams and be the best they can be.”

“Let’s also celebrate the people who work hard for children behind the scenes, such as the 39 local agencies who partner together within Jigsaw to support families and keep children safe; the child advocates for child witnesses of family violence in communities across the country; Child Youth and Family front line staff and the staff of the Office of the Children’s Commissioner”, Ms Clarke says. “Without their hard work, there would be much less awareness of children’s needs and their voices wouldn’t be heard.”

Jigsaw Family Services is a national network of 39 organisations throughout New Zealand working to end child abuse and family violence so that children thrive and families flourish.
