New Zealand Dancer named in prestigious Ballet Award

Ty King-Wall from Waihi, New Zealand is one of 6 dancers set to embark on an extraordinary journey as the nominees for the 2010 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award were revealed in Melbourne today.

Ty was a Junior Associate of the New Zealand School of Dance before leaving at age 16 to study full-time at The Australian Ballet School.  Ty joined The Australian Ballet in 2006.

The 2010 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award nominees are Amy Harris (Ballarat, Victoria), Ty King-Wall (New Zealand), Miwako Kubota (Japan), Natasha Kusen (Sydney, NSW), Dana Stephensen (Brisbane, QLD) and Vivienne Wong (Sydney, NSW).

Now in its eighth year, the award is the highest accolade of its kind available to an Australian ballet dancer.

The winner is awarded a $20,000 cash prize, provided by Telstra. The ever-popular People’s Choice Award, worth $5,000 cash, will go to the dancer who receives the most public votes in 2010.  Winners will be announced at the Sydney Opera House during the Opening Night of The Nutcracker in December.
