Galaxia
In the year 2010, when the world was promised so much, only one show can deliver - GALAXIA! - a once-in-a-lifetime
interactive space-glam dance party, set in a retro video-game universe filled with deadly aliens, beautiful princesses
and evil super villains.
On Saturday February 27th at The Garden Club, Wellington musicians The Beat Squad and KazaamBLAM! will be teaming up with local creative celebs to generate an audio-visual experience where Flash Gordon meets Star Wars
on the dance floor. Look out for the vocal talents of Jemaine Clement and the malevolent styling of Vinyl Burns, in his first serious acting role, as Evil Lord Yerkoff (that’s spelt with a ‘J’).
Galaxia is a live-music dance party set inside a space invaders video game. Like 1970’s video games, Galaxia is not just for
viewing and listening pleasure. Galaxia is an interactive show where party-goers engage in battling waves of alien and
robot armies while being entertained in the style of a space-rock opera and dancing into the small hours.
Organiser and Beat Squad member, Stephen Templer, says that The Beat Squad and KazaamBLAM! were natural partners for the
gig – “We both love theatrics, dressing up and we both play wild party music – although Kazaam are more electro and
we’re more disco/dance-hall/funk with the occasional 80’s power-ballad.”
“We’ve wanted to do something crazy for a while and push our music into a more theatrical dimension. I got inspired at a
dance party in Bristol this year – it got me thinking about how we could make something fresh for the Wellington scene.”
Stephen has roped in a large crew to help build robots, aliens, paint sets and back-drops and create costumes. “It’s
quite amazing the number of people who want to get involved – it’s like a mini-carnival! Since it’s a one-off show we’re
all working towards this single goal – making it the most awesome night for party-goers and the best damn
space-glam-dance-party in New Zealand this summer.”
