Eden Park to host historic rugby-league double header
4 February 2010 - Auckland, New Zealand – The Eden Park Trust has welcomed today’s announcement by New Zealand Rugby League that Eden Park is to host a historic rugby league ‘double header’ on Saturday 6th of November later this year.
Eden Park Chief Executive David Kennedy said the Park was proud to welcome the World’s leading rugby league nations as one of the keynote events marking completion of the stadium re-development.
“The traditional ANZAC rivalry combined with the flair and novelty of hosting England versus Papua New Guinea will create a truly unique occasion to showcase the new Eden Park,” Mr Kennedy said.
“The double header embodies all the excitement of the kind of world class events, the re-developed Eden Park will soon be capable of hosting and this is a tremendous opportunity to showcase the new Eden Park to the public, media and a new catchment of sports fans.”
This event will provide a ‘road-test’ of Eden Park, its systems as a multi-use stadium and the traffic management plans ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2011.
“This is Eden Park fulfilling its role as a real regional community asset and this event will generate millions of dollars of economic activity for local businesses and for the Auckland region,” Mr Kennedy said.
Eden Park intends to host a wider range of events in the future but Mr Kennedy emphasised it will always be the home of Auckland Rugby and Cricket.
