Summer movies and world records in Manukau

Summer movies and world records in Manukau

Free movies in the park, balloonologists and a world record attempt will be featured in the upcoming Botanic Garden Festival.

The festival will be held during the weekend of the 13 and 14 February and is an opportunity for you to get back to basics with events based outdoors. Come along to celebrate Mother Nature surrounded by the most stunning gardens in the region.

Pack a picnic, bring along the kids and pick a good spot to watch special screenings of two great movies outdoors at the Auckland Botanic Gardens for free.

Manukau City Council is treating the whole family on Saturday 13 February with two recent release movies – Ice Age and Night at the Museum 2.

Ice Age will kick off at 3.30pm and Night at the Museum 2 will screen at 5.45pm.

Manukau City Council Events manager Barbara Cox says the festival is being held in a great venue and will be fun for the whole family.

“Open-air cinema is a great way for the family to enjoy a perfect summer’s evening.”

The whole weekend will have heaps in store for entertaining the kids including a world record attempt which will get underway on Sunday 14 February from 2pm.

The council is calling for help to set the world records for the largest number of people wearing balloon hats at one time and for the tallest balloon hat.

At last year’s Botanic Garden Festival, Manukau managed to achieve the Australasian record.

This year it’s being taken it up a notch with an attempt at the world record.

Mrs Cox says that the balloon hats event is always a hit for the kids.

“Balloonologists, or balloon hat makers, will be on-site at the festival creating wonderful balloon hat designs. The balloon hats will be free and all we need is you and your family to help us smash the record for this exciting event.

“We need at least 5000 people wearing balloon hats to break the record – so spread the word and bring along your all of your family and friends.”

Free car parking for the event will be available at the Everglade Drive entrance to the Auckland Botanic Gardens.

The movie night and the balloon hat world record attempt are events which are part of the Botanic Garden Festival which will also feature fantastic speakers, giant-sized games and the gardeners’ market. For more information on the programme check out www.manukau.govt.nz/botanicgardenfestival
