Horses Deliver Almost $800k For Fixed Odds Punter

Forget The Reindeer – Horses Deliver Almost $800k For Fixed Odds Punter

For one very astute Auckland TAB punter, Christmas came late this year … but he wasn’t complaining. His $2,850 investment at the Ellerslie races on Monday earned him a cool $776,245 – a record fixed odds payout by the New Zealand TAB.

The punter – who wishes to remain anonymous – placed a boxed multi bet over six legs and chose 57 lines at $50 each. That meant a long day for the gentleman who had to watch ten races with mounting tension and excitement.

With the first five races in the bag, his final pick Tanha Strike, led for much of race ten only to be headed in the straight. But Lady Luck smiled and Tanha Strike regained the lead to win by a head.

New Zealand Racing Board Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Brown said the record payout would cast a spotlight on the TAB as it approaches its Diamond Jubilee in 2010.

“After 60 years, the TAB is very much a proud New Zealand institution. This is the largest fixed odds payout we’ve made since the first bet was taken in 1950. It seems appropriate that it has occurred now when so many Kiwis are enjoying one of those enduring summer entertainment experiences – a fun day at the races,” Mr Brown said.

The six horses involved and their fixed odds prices were:

Race 1 Fazzle ($4.00)
Race 3 Brave Warrior ($3.80)
Race 5 Mary's Book ($9.00)
Race 7 Green Supreme ($2.00)
Race 9 No Fear ($3.50)
Race 10 Tanha Strike ($3.80)
