Oscar winner Rahman launches his music of new Tamil film at BAFTA in London

Music of upcoming Tamil romance film “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa” was reportedly launched in a reception at BAFTA in London.

Oscar winner musician A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), who provided the soundtrack, reportedly addressed the gathering on the occasion while artists featured on the soundtrack performed live, including Naresh Iyer (Rang De Basanti). Musician Blaaze (Couples Retreat) and actors Simbu and Trisha Krishnan were also present.

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, applauded Rahman for creating a bridge between the music of east and west and for strengthening the worldwide market and stature of Indian music. Zed, who is the chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, urged Rahman to help nourish the next generation with the richness of Indian music, elements of whose theory were first found in ancient Hindu scripture Sama-Veda.

Called “A.R. Rahman musical”, “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa” (Will you come to me, from across the sky?), made in Tamil and remade in Telugu and to be released on Valentine’s Day (February 14), is a love story facing cultural clashes. Directed by Goutham Vasudev Menon (Gharshana) with cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and lyrics by Thamarai, it stars Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan Rajendar. It was shot in Malta, India, and Italy.

The seven-song soundtrack, which will be released globally through Sony BMG on January two, features lyrics in Tamil and Malayalam. Rahman sang the theme track “Mannipaaya” with Shreya Ghoshal.

Rahman, who has reportedly recorded sales of over 300 million, was called “Mozart of Madras'' by Time magazine. Rahman sees music “as a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it” and for “creating harmony in troubled times”.
