A Rageless Yuletide
Unlike in the UK this week, there’s no Rage Against Cowell in the New Zealand Charts heading towards the Christmas #1.
While Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name Of tops the UK list as an internet-led backlash against reality TV spawned acts, two of them (Stan Walker and Susan Boyle) hold on to claim the Christmas #1s here.
Self-confessed Mozzie (Maori Aussie) Walker makes it a third week in the Singles Chart penthouse while also ascending to
the airplay throne, leaping to the top of the RadioScope100 this week to give him a chart double.
He also holds at #2 on the Albums Chart, the same ranking it opens with in Australia this week. There’s no getting past
another Simon Cowell associated act though as Susan Boyle makes it a complete month at #1. I Dreamed A Dream ticks over an amazing ninth platinum certification, and there appear no obvious challengers waiting in the wings as the
release schedule dries up for the next month or so.
One chart with a brand new #1 out of the box, however, is the music DVD list, although the man who does it is no
stranger to topping that list. In fact, Dutch violinist Andre Rieu opens in the top two positions on the DVD chart, Live In Sydney 2009 at #1 and I Lost My Heart In Heidelberg at #2.
(And in case you’re wondering, RATM’s Killing In The Name Of peaked at #8 here back in November 1993 on its original release).
The New Single
#37 Timbaland featuring Katy Perry - If We Ever Meet Again
Can Timbaland and Katy Perry emulate their individual chart-toppers together? Lead single from Timbaland’s Shock Treatment II album is the sole fresh tune in the Top 40 at #37. If We Ever Meet Again is 38-year-old Timothy ‘Timbaland’ Mosley’s ninth hit as a performer (he’s been involved with plenty more as a
producer) and 25-year-old Katy Perry’s sixth. Both artists have each only placed one long player in the New Zealand
Charts thus far.
The New Album
#22 Alicia Keys - The Elements Of Freedom
Native New Yorker Alicia Keys turns 30 in January. And her fifth hit album here, The Elements Of Freedom, takes highest new entry honours at #22. It’s two years since her last appearance with 2007’s #5 As I Am. Her high water mark for both albums and singles came with her 2001 debuts, Songs In A Minor making #4 on the Albums Chart while lead single Fallin’ topped the list. Alicia has two concurrent hits at #8 and #22 this week.
