St James Theatre Announces Nov-Dec Events

Something different is happening at the St James Theatre this November and December. The first floor gallery will be turned into a cabaret venue for a GA “Life is a Cabaret Season” where people can relax with friends over wine and food while listening to four very different styles of music.

There are four nights with four fabulous women in the “Life is a Cabaret Season”. First up on Friday 27th November is Wellingtonian Jane Keller with her new cabaret show “So Many Disappointed Men”. This is a life long look at the adventures of meeting men, not meeting men, getting together, breaking up, defiance and love. If you thought finding love and internet dating are for the 20 and 30 something’s think again – with inflation the way it is - life now begins at 50!

Then on Thursday 3rd December it’s the turn of Bella Kalolo & the Soul Symphony. Bella’s is the big, powerful voice of soul. Her style is ‘edgy soul’ with an international funk jazz influence. Combined with the masterful sounds of the Soul Symphony this makes for a full big band sound and a voice and a night to remember. If you love Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan you’ll love Bella Kalolo.

A week later on Thursday 10th December, Christchurch based Naomi Ferguson performs “Songs My Mother Taught Me”. Its 1972 - a teenage girl leaves home and moves to Wellington to study. Determined to escape her sheltered and privileged upbringing and let her hair down she slides uncritically and deliciously through a misspent year of free-thinking, hippies and experiments, the excesses of the seventies: drugs, protest songs, motorbikes, music festivals, falling in love and heartbreak. “Songs My Mother Taught Me”, features some of the best songs of the 60’s & 70’s.

Finally on Thursday 17th December it’s the turn of L.A. Mitchell and the Nativa Band. This is a chance to enjoy an evening of sophisticated soul and jazz with the elegant L.A. Mitchell whose powerful, soaring vocals will be supported by the six-piece Nativa Band featuring many original songs from her two albums plus new songs made ready especially for this night. L.A was last seen at the St James with the hugely popular Fly My Pretties 3 concerts
