50 Metre Chocolate Log Guinness World Record
New World Whakatane to attempt 50 metre chocolate log Guinness World Record
The bakers at New World Whakatane will have an extra early start on Thursday morning – they have to prepare a 50 metre chocolate log.
The giant cake will be sold off slice by slice in support of CanTeen.
New World Whakatane Store Operations Manager Rosemary Sloman and several colleagues had just finished a Foodstuffs Management Development Programme and decided to fundraise for a living legacy - a CanTeen member to attend a leadership course.
She says the idea for the chocolate log came to her as she was driving home from Auckland after the completion of the last in-service training course with the store’s bakery manager Carla Hird.
“We were trying to think of things we could do to raise money to help send some CanTeen members on to a leadership programme. I looked across at our bakery manager and it just hit me!”
When she registered the attempt with Guinness World Records, she was told the current record for a chocolate log is 10 metres.
People will be able to get a taste of the chocolate log for a gold coin donation.
“I recently had a brush with cancer and so I understand totally what it is like for these young people.”
Local businesses are coming to the party with Bakels New Zealand donating ingredients, Blueberry Corner giving the strawberries to garnish the cake, and The Pink Plumbing Shop will contributing the white nylon guttering that will be used to help create it.
