Taranaki Fortunes Opening at Puke Ariki

How much do you know about the fortunes of Taranaki? What was the name of Taranaki’s first Jersey cow? What happened to New Plymouth’s trams? Who saved the Meeting of the Waters?

Find out the answers to these and more at Taranaki Fortunes: lost and won, opening at Puke Ariki on Saturday 14 November.

Taranaki Fortunes traces the ups and downs of our region – rich in opportunity but often challenged by circumstances and events. War, recession, topography and isolation meet robustness, resourcefulness, doggedness and ingenuity and that Taranaki spirit that makes our region unique.

“You can test your knowledge about Taranaki’s fortune on our brand new interactive computer game ‘Who Wants To Win A Fortune’,” says Bill Macnaught, Manager Puke Ariki.

“It’s based on the TV show ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ and follows the multi-choice question and answer format – with all the answers found in the exhibition.

“There are six computers set up with the game and you don’t need any prior computer knowledge so head down and give it a go!”

To launch the new game be listening to More FM Breakfast with Waggs and Beth every morning from Monday 16 November, answer the questions about Taranaki’s fortune and secure a spot in the ‘Who Wants To Win A Fortune” competition on Sunday 22 November at Puke Ariki – various prizes up for grabs including a helicopter flight over New Plymouth with Heliview valued at $500!

“You can also retrace the fortunes of our region with the exhibition book,” says Bill.

“With more than 200 photographs, stories from the exhibition and commentaries on the fortunes of the region by some of Taranaki's business leaders, this is a great Christmas gift!”

Taranaki Fortunes: lost and won opens on Saturday 14 November and runs until Sunday 21 February. With free entry, interactive activities and lots of events planned during the exhibition, it’s a great outing for the whole family. And after your visit pick up a copy of Fortunes: the book from the shop at Puke Ariki.

About the Taranaki Fortunes: lost and won exhibition

Split into three sections – Producing the Goods, Paving the Way, and Trade and Exchange, Taranaki Fortunes takes a close look at the bad times and the good through a story that features hope and heartbreak, innovation and sheer hard work.

Featuring three short black and white films from Taranaki running on loop, numerous scaled models as well as a miniature rotating milking shed and dairy “chiller”, the exhibition aims to engage and inspire discussions about our region’s fortune.
