UCOL fires up for fashion show

UCOL fires up for fashion show

Discarded plastic bags, men’s neckties and parking vouchers will have a new lease on life as they are paraded down the catwalk at UCOL’s Fire & Ice Fashion Show on Wednesday night.

The materials have been used by Level 3 Certificate of Fashion, Health and Beauty students to create garments in the Recycled Wearable Art category at the annual show. The students will also display their clothing design and tailoring talents in two other parade categories, including ‘From Rummage to Runway’ where a pre-loved garment is transformed into a newly styled item.

Level 1 Certificate in Fashion and Beauty students will demonstrate what can be created from an everyday tee-shirt. The students have experimented with tie dye, fabric painting and embellishment to give their tee-shirts a personality of their own. Level 1 students will also take part in three other design and making categories.

Women’s foundation garments will also be in the spotlight during the AS@U Fantasy Bras segment of the show. Shrouded in secrecy, the designers and models will remain a mystery until show-time.

UCOL’s most fashionable event of the year will be held in the newly refurbished Atrium, complete with custom built catwalk and specialised light and sound.
Show organiser and UCOL Fashion lecturer Sheran Merritt says the support of local businesses has been amazing and several of them will provide prizes to category winners.

The Fire & Ice Fashion Show will start at 7.30pm at the UCOL Atrium on the corner of Princess and King Streets.

Tickets are $5 and available from UCOL Student Resource Centre, AS@U, Arthur Toye Fabrics and Guilty as Sin.
