We hate it, say pets
If you’re searching for the cat this Thursday, try under the bed.

If you’re wondering why the family dog has its tail between its legs, check the calendar.

Guy Fawkes night – November 5 – is looming, and if the family pet could talk it would probably tell you it’s their worst night of the year.

Not only does Guy Fawkes night encourage some people to be cruel to defenceless animals, the noise of the fireworks can be distressing for some pets,” said New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) spokesperson Pieter Verhoek.

Veterinarians recommend keeping companion pets inside.

“You could close your curtains so your animals can’t see the fireworks, and you may want to switch on the radio or television – a familiar sound - to distract pets from the fireworks’ noise.

“If your pet is hiding underneath a bed or beanbag, don’t coax it out. It’s there because it feels safe,” Pieter said.

He said veterinarians can prescribe remedies to help sensitive pets.

Ensure all pets are microchipped or have collars with visible contact details incase your pet escapes.

Livestock owners should check paddock fences are secure because farm animals can injure themselves escaping on to roads.
