A Festival on its Way for Manukau Film Buffs

Media release

9 October 2009

Manukau Film Festival makes a welcome return to the city, offering film buffs the opportunity to see some great flicks in their backyard.

This year’s film festival brings a collection of home-grown and internationally acclaimed films to local theatres, as a part of the Manukau Festival of Arts.

Films will be shown at three different locations across the city including Metro Theatre in Mangere, Spotlight Theatre in Papatoetoe and Uxbridge Creative Centre in Howick from 19 October to 11 November.

All three theatres will be playing Children of the Migration, a warm, funny and moving documentary. This film focuses on what it is like to be a Pacific Islander living in New Zealand and features interviews with All Black Tana Umaga, boxer David Tua, and hip-hop artist King Kapisi.

For an international flavour, both Metro Theatre and Uxbridge Creative Centre will be featuring the film The Class, otherwise known by its French title as Entre les murs. Winner of the Golden Palm, the highest prize at the Cannes Film Festival, in 2008, this film is based on an autobiographical novel about a French high school teacher who grapples with students in a racially-mixed part of France.

Spotlight Theatre and Uxbridge Creative Centre will be showing the award-winning documentary on New Zealand’s own comedic, country singing, dancing, and yodelling double act – The Topp Twins.

A number of exciting films will be showing at Uxbridge Creative Centre during the film festival including The Map Reader, The Italian, and Man on Wire.

Tickets are $5 at the door, cash only. For more information about the films and screening times visit http://www.mfa.org.nz .
