Rotorua connection in Wednesday's rugby league test

ROTORUA  09.10.09: Wednesday's rugby league test between New Zealand and Tonga will have special meaning for one of the Kiwis' newest recruits.

Rotorua-born Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is returning home and is in contention to play his first international league test.

Rookie Waerea-Hargreaves, 20, grew up in Rotorua and moved to Australia as an eight-year-old.

He is expected to don the black jersey for the first time on Wednesday night [14 October] at the Rotorua International Stadium, when the Kiwi league team takes on Tonga.

The Manly second-rower is one of seven new recruits in coach Stephen Kearney's squad of 23, and the Rotorua match is the only test being played in New Zealand this year.

Events & Venues Rotorua general manager, Peter McLeod, says staging the test match in Rotorua, and the presence of some of the world’s best league players in and around the community, should give a local boost to the rugby league code.

The Kiwis are in Rotorua [arrive Saturday] leading up to the test match, and in preparation for their tour to Europe for a four-nation competition with Australia, Great Britain and France.

The game kicks off at 7.35pm on Wednesday 14 October at Rotorua International Stadium. Tickets are available from the Convention Centre’s Ticketmaster outlet or at the stadium.
