Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori supports Māori Television bid

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission) supports Māori Television’s bid for the free to air rights of the Rugby World Cup 2011.

“Rugby World Cup 2011will put the spotlight on Aotearoa and visitors here will not only want to watch the rugby but also immerse themselves in the wider culture. Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori is excited at the prospect of increased Māori language promotion and exposure should Māori Television’s bid be successful, and as such, a decision to submit a bid to the IRB for the free to air rights is fitting”, says Chief Executive, Huhana Rokx.

Māori Television has established themselves broadcasting iconic cultural New Zealand events, and have achieved a number of unique milestones that show their flair for ensuring the wider view of what this country represents.

“Māori language and culture is our point of difference in the world, so there is a real opportunity with RWC 2011 and Māori Television’s involvement to explore how language promotion alongside sport and programming can be developed to ensure a unique and special experience for all those who come here to share in the event”, says Huhana Rokx.

Rugby World Cup 2011 is an opportunity for the country to celebrate who we are as a nation and so it makes sense to have our Māori language television broadcaster involved.

“We are focused on the bigger picture and what can be achieved from having Māori Television secure the free to air rights. Should Māori Television be successful in their bid we are confident that they will deliver a range of Rugby World Cup 2011 programming that is of a high quality, inclusive, powerful and memorable” says Huhana Rokx.
