Journey to become a Diplomat - Cape to Cairo - Then and Now

Mr. George Cunningham, Charge d'Affaires a.i., Delegation of the European Commission to New Zealand, will talk about his incredible 27-month walk across Africa.

The explorer-turned-diplomat,who chronicled his journey in his book "Journey to become a Diplomat" (Cunningham, 2005) trekked from Alexandria, Egypt to Capetown, South Africa, from 1979-1981. The 7,000 mile march mirrored a journey taken almost a century earlier by Ewart Grogan, from 1898-1900. While colonial domination of the continent had given way to independence during this period, what had really changed? Mr Cunningham will talk of the differences and similarities between the two treks.

This lecture has previously been presented at the famous Explorer's Club in New York, and at the 2008 Hillary Lecture at Auckland Museum. The book "Journey to become a Diplomat" (Cunningham, 2005) will be on sale and George will be available to sign copies.
