MAORI TELEVISION PROMO WINS GOLD – AGAIN!

PUBLICITY RELEASE
THURSDAY OCTOBER 1 2009

Maori Television has won a gold award for Best News and Current Affairs Promo at the Promax/BDA ANZ 2009 held in Sydney, Australia, from September 25-26.

The Promax/BDA awards, which are presented in each region, are regarded as the most prestigious for creative endeavours by promotion and marketing professionals working in electronic media. Maori Television’s promotions department scooped top honours for its on-air promo of the daily news programme, Te Kaea (7.30 PM and with English subtitles at 11.00 PM).

General Manager Programming, Haunui Royal, says only five promos were entered into this year’s competition and two of those were nominated including ‘Whakamatauhia o Whakaaro’ in the category for Best Children’s Promo. Mr Royal says the winning entry featuring Waiariki journalist Mere McLean is one of a series of promos highlighting Te Kaea and its reporting presence in the regions.

“We came up with the phrase ‘Ko Ngai Matou, Ko Ngai Tatou’, which means our people are your people, to encapsulate the way that our reporters are out there amongst the people getting the stories that matter most to Maori. We also shot the reporters in the field and at iconic locations, and showed their close connection with the communities they serve, te hau kainga.

“This success continues the fine tradition of Maori Television’s promotions team fighting well above their weight and winning out in international competitions over larger broadcasters with significantly higher budgets and staffing levels.”

The promotions department – headed by Sheila Byrne – has already won three gold and four silver awards since 2004. To view the award-winning promo for Te Kaea, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrMKQFWtoPI
