New Beijing opportunity for NZ artists

New Beijing opportunity for NZ artists

Applications are now being sought from New Zealand artists for a visual arts residency in Beijing.

The two month Platform China residency is being offered by the Asia New Zealand Foundation with the support of Creative New Zealand.

The timing of this inaugural opportunity is during the months of March to June in 2010. The deadline for applications is November 20, 2009.
This is an exciting opportunity for a New Zealand visual artist to work in Beijing, a city that has developed a dynamic contemporary arts scene which now attracts artists and curators from all over the world.
Many Asian and Western galleries have set up new spaces in the city in recognition of China’s unique role in the development of contemporary Asian art.

The successful New Zealand candidate will be hosted by the Platform China Contemporary Art Institute which is located in the East End art district of Beijing, in Caochangdi Village, close to the 798 art district. The village is a newly emerging artistic community housing artist studios and art centres such as the prestigious Galerie Urs Meile (www.galerieursmeile.com).

Platform China will provide the selected candidate with the opportunity to learn about China, communicate with Chinese artists, and to establish networks and dialogues between Chinese and international artists. Visual artists, new media artists, photographers, curators, writers, designers, and researchers are all invited to apply for this opportunity.

• a return economy airfare between New Zealand and Beijing
• accommodation
• a stipend of NZ$40 per day
• NZ$500 towards production costs
• the cost of a single entry tourist visa
• NZ$300 towards travel insurance.

Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents residing in New Zealand.

Professional practising artists with a record of achievement in the preferred genres of arts practice are invited to submit a written application by no later than 5pm on Friday, November 20, 2009.
