Clean sweep at the Fitness Life Awards for the YMCA

The YMCA have done it again, picking up 5 awards at the 28 August 2009 awards winning all by one of the categories they entered.

The prestigious annual Fitness Life Awards black tie gala dinner and awards ceremony is the country’s only national competition celebrating the dedication and success of our world-class fitness leaders and the important role they play in the health of our society. More than 300 guests enjoyed an evening of great food and entertainment, supported by industry body Fitness New Zealand.

Last year the YMCA Auckland picked up four Winner awards, 1 runner up award and 2 finalist awards at the National Fitness Industry Awards at the Hyatt Regency.

This year they won the following awards.

The Schools Initiative awards went to YMCA Otahuhu for their programme run with Otahuhu College and initiated by Shamila Unka, Centre Manager. Students with high BMI’s were identified and worked on 10 week block lifestyle classes. This was run within school time, and the judges were impressed with the initiative to drive such a programme. The judges said: “YMCA Auckland is meeting a real need in the community by working alongside schools to assist them in delivering exercise programmes for youth. It is obviously driven by a desire to make a difference in the community and to have an impact on this important target group. It is also constantly seeking to expand and improve on its programme. It’s great to see such a strong partnership with schools.”
