HK-NZ treaty talks highlighted by festival
An inaugural Hong Kong Film Festival is the highlight of a Hong Kong Week being held in Auckland September 14 – 20.
Five of the latest films from Hong Kong’s vibrant film sector will screen at the Rialto Newmarket. Four of the films are in Cantonese and the fifth is in Mandarin. All have English subtitles.
The Hong Kong Week has been organised by the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association (HKNZBA) and Asian NZ Film Foundation Trust (ANZFFT), with backing from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong Tourism Board, Invest Hong Kong, Asia NZ Foundation and suppliers.
Eva Ho, President of the HKNZBA, says with the NZ and HK Governments currently negotiating a close economic partnership trade agreement, it is a good time to celebrate Hong Kong.
A NZ-HK film and digital coproduction treaty is also being considered by both governments.
Alex Lee, founder of the ANZFFT, says there is already some cooperative work taking place between Hong Kong and New Zealand and an agreement between governments would help the two film industries to further develop the potential for growing joint venture projects.
The Hong Kong Week includes a trade and travel display at the Rialto Shopping Centre and Cinema, a NZ wine and HK food appreciation banquet and a film sector seminar followed by a cocktail party preceding the screening of the movie “The Way We Are”.
