2009 Silver Ferns Team Named To Play World 7
National Selectors today named a 12-strong Silver Ferns side which features two new caps, shooter Anna Thompson and defender Larrissa Willcox along with the return of mid-courter Temepara George to the side that will take on the World 7 in the New World International Netball series beginning on Monday.
After a competitive trial held in Wellington over the last couple of days, the final 12 players were selected due to their determination and strong combinations in each area of the court.
The team consists of experienced heads and youthful vibrancy as well as offering an array of combinations, especially in the midcourt and defence areas.
After being selected for the Silver Ferns Squad in 2008, shooter Anna Thompson has gone one step further and secured a spot within the Silver Ferns team. Anna has been playing for the Canterbury Tactix and brings a lot of movement to the shooting circle.
“Anna is a versatile player who has the ability to switch between goal attack and wing attack,” said Aitken. “She is a clever player who reads the game well and has a great eye when it comes to passing into space.”
Aitken believes that Willcox’s confidence and tenacity will be an asset to the team.
“Larrissa has shown great drive and determination on and off the court,” says Aitken.
After two years away from the international Netball stage, Temepara George has secured her place back in the Silver Ferns. She has shown tremendous skill and leadership in recent years with her team the LG Mystics in the ANZ Championship and her experience will be a welcome attribute to the Silver Ferns as they take on the World 7.
“Temepara has continued to show a high level of skill, composure and flair” Aiken says. “We look forward to seeing the exciting dynamic she will bring to the Silver Fern midcourt.”
The Silver Ferns team to play against the World 7 in the New World International Netball Series is:
Liana Barrett-Chase, Maree Bowden, Temepara George, Katrina Grant, Paula Griffin, Joline Henry, Laura Langman, Larissa Willcox, Anna Thompson, Maria Tutaia , Irene van Dyk , Casey Williams – Captain.
The Silver Ferns will be available for all interviews from 2.30pm at the Holiday Inn, 75 Featherston Street, Wellington.
