Bid for Peace: Works by New Zealanders in online peace auction

A number of works by well-known New Zealand writers, performers and a photographer went online today in an auction which is part of a global initiative for peace and non-violence. Running until 27 August, the auction of signed books, photographs and music aims to raise funds for the World March for Peace and Nonviolence, a global march starting in New Zealand on 2 October – Mahatma Gandhi’s 140th Birthday and the UN International Day for Nonviolence - and ending in Argentina 90 countries and 90 days later.

The March - which is calling for nuclear abolition, an end to war and the promotion of non-violence at all levels of society - is supported by at least eight Heads of State and as well as numerous Nobel Peace Laureates, movie stars, sports celebrities, mayors, parliamentarians and other civil society leaders.

“Too often the media is saturated with violence and conflicts, thus spreading cynicism and hopelessness,” says Alyn Ware, New Zealand coordinator for the World March. “Now we have a superb opportunity to highlight and celebrate the many successful examples, in our communities and around the world, of violence prevention, conflict resolution and cross-cultural understanding, bringing us hope and inspiration for the future.”

Pieces have been donated to the auction by Dame Fiona Kidman, Ans Westra, Joy Cowley, Opshop, Mary McCallum, Yulia, Glenn Colquhoun and Peter Elliot.

“The auction gives New Zealanders the opportunity to acquire a literary, visual or musical treasure – at the same time as supporting this incredible initiative for peace,” says auction organizer Lachlan MacKay. “It also provides a taste of the exciting events planned throughout New Zealand for the start of the World March.”

Lachlan Mackay, coordinator of the online auction stated “it is really thrilling to see so many people supporting this initiative and the events that we are organizing in New Zealand. I hope that the World March for Peace and Nonviolence will inspire others to spread the message about peace and non-violence and about the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi”
