Russian cinematographer presents at Spark

Pre-eminent Russian cinematographer and documentary filmmaker presents at Spark
Marina Goldovskaya

In the 1960s, Marina Goldovskaya became one of the then-Soviet Union’s pre-eminent cinematographers and documentary filmmakers. Everyone awaited the work of this seemingly fragile woman, who was filled with strong passion and determination, ready to walk through the proverbial fire to capture a unique cinematic glimpse of life’s truths. She has since made dozens of films, and mentored numerous young filmmakers, both in Russia and in the United States, where she has lived for the last number of years.

This is a passion that has been manifested in over 30 documentaries made over the course of 40 years, for which she received an award for Scholarship and Preservation from the International Documentary Association.

At the 1989 IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), she received the special Jury Award for her documentary film “Solovki Power”, a chronicle of one of the most terrible of Stalin’s labour camps in the north of Russia. In 2001, she won the IDA Award-Honourable Mention for her film “The Prince is Back.”

Marina Goldovskaya has been a full-time professor at UCLA since 1995 and credits the award from the International Documentary Association to her long tenured teaching in the film department. She was a Professor at Moscow State University and has been a Visiting Professor at UC San Diego and Vassar College. She has released a memoir called ‘A Woman with a Movie Camera’, available in Russian and English. The book gives an insight into the art of independent documentary filmmaking, while also offering an insider’s account on the specifics of the media and arts world in the Soviet Union.

“Being a documentary filmmaker saves you from the fear and doubts and allows you to do something meaningful,” Goldovskaya says on documentary.org. “I know for a fact that I am the luckiest woman in the world, with the best profession in the world.”
