Mary-Alice Waters
Socialist Author and Journalist Visiting Auckland July 17-24
Mary-Alice Waters is the author or editor of numerous books on the Cuban Revolution, as well as titles on women's
liberation and socialism. Resident in New York, she is editor of the Marxist magazine New International, a contributor
to the Militant newspaper, and a leader of the Socialist Workers Party in the United States.
Waters will be in New Zealand to present a paper at the July 18-19 Rising Dragons, Soaring Bananas International
Conference being organised by the New Zealand Chinese Association and the International Society for the Studies of
Chinese Overseas. The paper, titled “The Unique History of Chinese in Cuba”, draws on her research in preparing the 2005
book Our History Is Still Being Written: The Story of Three Chinese-Cuban Generals in the Cuban Revolution. Waters
edited and wrote the introduction for the book, which is available in Chinese, English, and Spanish. It is one of an
18-book series on the Cuban Revolution edited by Waters and published by Pathfinder Press.
Waters will be staying on in Auckland for the week following the conference to address public meetings on the themes of
her paper and of other books she has authored. These include Capitalism and the Transformation of Africa: Reports from
Equatorial Guinea. Details of these meetings are attached.
