Socialist Author and Journalist Visiting Auckland July 17-24
Mary-Alice Waters is the author or editor of numerous books on the Cuban Revolution, as well as titles on women's liberation and socialism. Resident in New York, she is editor of the Marxist magazine New International, a contributor to the Militant newspaper, and a leader of the Socialist Workers Party in the United States.
Waters will be in New Zealand to present a paper at the July 18-19 Rising Dragons, Soaring Bananas International Conference being organised by the New Zealand Chinese Association and the International Society for the Studies of Chinese Overseas. The paper, titled “The Unique History of Chinese in Cuba”, draws on her research in preparing the 2005 book Our History Is Still Being Written: The Story of Three Chinese-Cuban Generals in the Cuban Revolution. Waters edited and wrote the introduction for the book, which is available in Chinese, English, and Spanish. It is one of an 18-book series on the Cuban Revolution edited by Waters and published by Pathfinder Press.
Waters will be staying on in Auckland for the week following the conference to address public meetings on the themes of her paper and of other books she has authored. These include Capitalism and the Transformation of Africa: Reports from Equatorial Guinea. Details of these meetings are attached.
