Young Illustrators Bring Words Alive
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
'Young Illustrators Bring Words Alive'
Rosalind Atkinson and Leilani Isara present a brand new exhibition of works at well-known local Wellington gallery Thistle Hall. However this exhibition has a difference: it is comprised of illustrative works, and both artists would describe themselves as full-time illustrators. What is illustration? Is it cartoon characters? Is it art? In this exhibition Massey University graduates Leilani and Rosalind present their perspective on contemporary illustration through a series of watercolours, prints, drawings and sketches. As it is found here, illustration is the art of bringing words to life through visual imagination. Both artists bring alive fondly remembered words from their own childhoods and reinterpret and imagine them as contemporary works of art.
Both artists have based their works upon favourite childhood texts, reconsidered from a visual perspective. Leilani's works centre around the creatures of fairystories and the meanings found within them, whilst Rosalind's are inspired by the absurd poetry of Lewis Carrol and Edward Lear. Exquisite images based on the Brothers Grimm, The Little Prince, Alice in Wonderland, The Owl and the Pussycat, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and more are all available to purchase.
Leilani and Rosalind both consider themselves part of a burgeoning new school of artist/illustrators who believe that illustration is by no means inferior to the traditional disciplines considered 'fine art'. To them, being illustrators is all about speaking visual language and the beauty of translating words or ideas into images. This exhibition raises questions about the definition of illustration versus art, and it's changing position in creative society.
Both artists will be in the gallery all weekend and more than happy to answer questions.
