130 bottles of Hawke’s Bay wine on the…road

After months of preparation and planning, the country’s only red wine expo is finally underway, bringing delight to hundreds of eager ticket holders, many of whom have been patiently waiting since last year’s successful event.

Hot Red Hawke’s Bay hits the road tomorrow with over 20 Hawke’s Bay winemakers making their way down to Christchurch for the first of three shows on Tuesday, taking with them an estimated 130 bottles of wine or more.

Hawke’s Bay ‘hottest’ and most respected winemakers are showing their most prized wares to around 600 trade, media and wine enthusiasts at the three venues in Christchurch, Wellington and finally Auckland over three days.

19 participating wineries will be attending all three road show locations, 23 in Auckland, and 25 in Wellington giving New Zealand’s wine lovers the opportunity to sample some of the country’s best, including new releases, current vintages and library wines, in one accessible expo.

“Hawke’s Bay is well known as New Zealand’s number one red wine producing region, with many of the region’s wines standing alongside some of the world’s finest reds. Our winemakers are showing off a selection of their very best wines this week,” says Lyn Bevin, Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers Inc. Executive Officer.

Ticket sales in the lead-up to the expo have been high and organisers are expecting a good turnout at each of the three shows.

“We’ve built a solid reputation over the past five years and we find that many of our guests return year after year to see what Hawke’s Bay reds have to offer,” says Ms Bevin.

“We’ve also limited general admission tickets this year to just 200 per show in order to maintain the casual and relaxed ambience, and also allow all our guests the opportunity to chat with the winemakers.”

Ms Bevin says that the winemakers also look forward to the event, enjoying the opportunity to chat with people who are just as passionate about red wine as they are.

“It’s nice to be able to put this together for the local winemaking community and I think it offers both winemakers and wine drinkers a unique opportunity,” she says.

Hot Red Hawke’s Bay is being held in Christchurch at Christchurch Town Hall on Tuesday July 7; in Wellington at The Duxton Hotel on Wednesday July 8; and in Auckland at Heritage Hotel on Thursday July 9.
