The hair was flying at the Sydney Hair Expo earlier this month and Whanganui UCOL hairdressing lecturer Robyn Collins was in the thick of it.
Robyn competed against 34 other stylists in the cutting “speed event” and described it as “fun, fast and furious”. Competitors had 35 minutes to cut, blow wave and style their model’s hair without the use of a mirror.
“It is really fun and so different from how we are used to working,” she says. “The stage was absolute chaos.”
Only one award is presented and although Robyn did not win the event, she was delighted with her handiwork and was rewarded by compliments and future opportunities to work with the event’s main sponsor.
Robyn was among a contingent of hairdressing teaching staff and students attending from all three UCOL campuses. “It is an amazing environment for our staff and students to experience,” she says. Robyn has attended the Expo on several occasions and admits it feeds her passion and feeds her energy.
The International event is hugely popular with Australian and New Zealand hairstylists and regularly attracts the big names in the industry from around the world. Promoted as a premium salon industry event, the Sydney Hair Expo combines seminars, competitions, demonstrations, session work and a huge Trade Show.
“We can keep in touch with the latest products, techniques and trends,” says Robyn. “What we learn there, we apply here at UCOL.”
