World Team Named For International Netball Series

World Team Named For The New World International Netball Series

The Silver Ferns take on The World 7 team coached by Julie Fitzgerald in the New World International Netball Series, August 24th, 26th and 29th.

The team, comprising of predominantly Jamaican, England and Australian players, will be an exciting collaboration of all the different talents each country brings to the game of Netball.

The explosive elevation from the Jamaicans combined with Australian through-court speed and the English world class defensive unit of Geva Mentor and Sonia Mkoloma will generate a challenge for the Silver Ferns who will look to repeat last year’s success by again winning all their International Series in 2009.

Eight of the World 7 Team have been playing in the 2009 ANZ Championship and will be well accustomed to the New Zealand style of play, as will their coach, NSW Swifts Coach Julie Fitzgerald.

Julie led her team to victory in the inaugural year of the ANZ Championship in 2008 and was named Netball Australia Coach of the Year, a feat she has accomplished four times in the past.

Fitzgerald believes the World 7 team is a great concept.

“I am excited and eager to take up the challenge of working with such a variety of talented netballers

“It’s not every day that a coach gets to learn from and mould together all the different styles of Netball from around the World” she said.

Named Assistant Coach Lisa Alexander currently works alongside Jane Woodlands Thompson for the Adelaide Thunderbirds as assistant coach. She has over 26 years experience as a high performance coach and was once the Australian 21/U Coach.
