June News

Pacific music celebrated another bumper year on May 23 with the boys from Nesian Mystik taking home four awards at the S3 Pacific Music Awards 2009. Other IMNZ-affiliated winners at the Awards were Ladi6, Devolo, Sweet & Irie, and Tigilau Ness who won the Manukau Institute of Technology Lifetime Achievement Award. Also acknowledged for his outstanding achievements and success in the music industry internationally was Savage for his hit single ‘Swing’. The audience was treated to performances by rising Pacific artists and established music stars including Ill Semantics, J Williams, P.Money, Vince Harder, PNC, Scribe and David Dallas, and Nesian Mystik featuring Cydel and Che Fu.

Bidding on SOUNZtender for unique works by John Psathas and four other New Zealand composers has now closed; proceeds are going to SOUNZ (the Centre for New Zealand Music). And the results for the Sir Julius Vogel Awards for NZ Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror for 2009 have been announced - Kora’s music video/animated masterpiece for Skankenstein took home the award for Best Dramatic Presentation - Short Form. The video was created by the team at Kraft:haus films in Wellington. The Sir Julius Vogel Awards were awarded to professionals and fans for work that was undertaken, completed or released during the 2008 calendar year.

Soul songstress L.A Mitchell has accepted the position of inaugural Songwriter in Residence 2009 for The University of Auckland’s Popular Music Programme. L.A will mentor around 40 young Kiwi performers and songwriters this year and will be available to students to talk about songwriting and performance as well also coaching them on vocal production skills. The UoA Popular Music Programme is excited to team up with L.A and sees this as a great way to get the new Songwriter in Residence initiative underway.

Congratulations to the IMNZ artists who received Outward Sound grants in the latest round. Phase Two grants were awarded to Die! Die! Die! to promote their current and forthcoming albums in the United Kingdom and to The Brunettes to promote the release of the band’s new album ‘Paper Dolls’ in the US, Australia, Europe, UK and Japan. Phase One in-market touring/scoping grants were awarded to P-Money to support the release of his single Everything (ft. Vince Harder) in the UK market, to Charlie ASH to pursue release opportunities with various labels and producers in the UK and Europe and to showcase at The Great Escape in Brighton.
NZ On Air have announced the recipients of their last Music Video funding round for the 2008/2009 funding year (to 30 June). Successful applicants from the IMNZ family are: Boh Runga, Charlie Ash, Collapsing Cities, dDub, Haylee Fisher, Kidz In Space, Minuit, Over The Atlantic, Recloose, Rhian Sheehan and The Checks.

International Action

Selon Recliner’s video for Lonely Girl has been selected to air on Music Mix USA, which features music videos from big name artists, and is seen on over 25 CBS, NBC, FOX, and MyTV affiliates around the US as well as via Direct TV and the AMG Network. Leila Adu is back in Europe with a full schedule following her AK09 in March. She’s performing live on Italian National Radio (Rai 3 Radio), and is picking up press and blog reviews in Italy too. She’s also releasing an avant blues album this week, ‘Truth in the Abstract Blues’, which has global distribution through Italian-based Goodfellas distribution. The single Cherry Pie is on the industry-only Orchestra Pit compilation CD, featuring artists who have played at the Pit in London, and ‘Dark Joan’, recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, Chicago, features Adu’s solo songs on piano, tack piano and Wurlitzer; this is out on vinyl and CD on Frizz Records, London in October.

Disasteradio has completed a three week tour of the US playing killer shows all over the country, and he’s launching into a 3-month attack on Europe, with shows scheduled in twelve different countries including eight summer festivals with some of big names including La Terra Trema in France with Deerhoof, Synch in Greece with Tortoise and Squarepusher, Off Festival in Poland with The National and Spiritualized, Standon Festival in the UK with Ladytron, and Wilsonic Festival in Slovakia with Junior Boys and Hot Chip. As well as all that, he’s headlining Weirdofest in Brussels, Belgium - an event headlined last year by Dan Deacon. With shows already booked in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, Greece, Slovenia, Slovakia, The Netherlands, Belgium, The Czech Republic and Luxembourg and many more shows to be confirmed, it’s looking huge. Along on the tour with Disasteradio is friend and video maker Simon Ward who is filming a video diary of the tour; you can keep up with the diaries on A Low Hum’s website. The Enright House have just finished their US tour and about to start hitting up Europe soon; they have also just released a limited 100 run split EP with US based Pushmi-Pullyu; and the video for We Might as well have Stayed Young is on YouTube now.

After touring New Zealand in March, Steve Abel spent April playing his first US dates, including New York shows with Jolie Holland (who guests on Steve's album). NY blog You Crazy Dreamers said: “Jolie was playing at a great place called The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in Lower East Side… she invited various friends up on stage to sing with her. One that really stole the show for me was Steve Abel: a mixture of the sparseness and cut throat honesty of Will Oldham and the dark, haunting lyrics of Nick Cave. The songwriting and musicanship is outstanding, talent.” Following that, Steve returned to the UK for a series of dates to celebrate the release there of his ‘Flax Happy’ album, with more dates this month which included a couple of guest appearances with The Bats. He’s also picked up great UK review in the Leeds Guide, Organ Magazine and Pop Musicology.

The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band has relocated to Berlin for six months to spread their Polkapocalyptic vision far and wide; accompanying them is Monkey boss Nigel Braddock who will be pursuing opportunities for artists on the label's roster in Berlin and throughout Europe - we’ll keep you up to date with their progress.

New Releases

In early 2008, Annabel Alpers, aka Bachelorette, funded her first, and ultimately groundbreaking, US tour. Along the way, she sold some records to an eager Ryan Adams at a small club in New York City and made fans out of execs from Chicago's Drag City Records. Back in NZ, Annabel secluded herself in Otaki Beach to write ‘My Electric Family’; the recording process included trekking a visit to Whenuapai to record the Royal NZ Air Force Brass Band for one track, and Annabel was approached by Chicago's legendary Drag City Records to put out the new album. Bachelorette's unique sound this time around is enhanced by the addition of live drumming, brass, guitar, bass and pedal steel (played by Dino Karlis (HDU), Tom Watson (Cassette), Craig Terris (Cassette), Andrew Bain (Fur Patrol/Cassette) and Lee Prebble (The Black Seeds, Trinity Roots, the Phoenix Foundation etc). ‘My Electric Family’ is Bachelorette’s second album and first on her own Particle Tracks label; she graces the cover of the latest NZ Musician magazine.

When I Do is just out as the first single from Miriam Clancy's forthcoming album and features Aaron Tokona (Weta), Chip Matthews (Opensouls) and Chris O'Connor (Don McGlashan, S.J.D.) – plus Miriam playing a 150 year old Spinete, a toy synth she found in an opshop, and pretty much everything else. The gravity defying video was directed by Tim Van Dammen (Smashproof, Motocade, Sola Rosa and The Checks), and Miriam’s new album ‘Magnetic’ is due out later this year. She has also just signed a publishing deal with Mushroom. Don McGlashan, Sean Donnelly and dDub have banded together to help raise awareness of dyslexia via a single, The Closer You Get, The Bigger I Look, written by McGlashan, produced by Donnelly and performed by dDub. You can download it from the website DyslexiaFoundation.org, and a music video – also available at this link – has been created to support the song and further understanding of dyslexia.

Singer, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Lisa Crawley has played in every manner of environment, from dodgy pubs to the VIP Lounge at the Ritz in London to 5-star hotels in Japan to just about every available space back at home. Until last year, the 22 year-old was living in London, playing solo and also as part of Rodney Fisher's (Goodshirt) live band; and upon her return, she has quickly established herself as a known presence in the Auckland music scene. Now, having self-released one EP of original material (‘Shoot the Night’), Lisa releases her second EP, ‘Hello, Goodbye, and Everything In Between’, recorded with her live band The Conversations which features members of The Hot Grits, The Shades and The Mint Chicks.

Finally released is ‘People Like People Like You’, a disc of songs from much-respected long-lost Wellington band Beat Rhythm Fashion. Coming from the post-punk movement of the late 70's, the band released three striking 7 inch singles on the Bunk Records label and had 2 tracks on the legendary ‘**** aka four stars’compilation album (also featuring Lord of the Rings producer Fran Walsh in the Wall Sockets and life in the fridge exists), plus 3 live tracks on the ‘Wellington Zone’ compilation. By the end of 1982, the band decided to make the move to Melbourne, but somehow phase 2 of their career never happened as it should have; but thanks to Failsafe records, you can now (re)discover them. And speaking of reissues, An Emerald City’s debut self-titled EP has been reissued by Monkey Records/Border Music.

Hikoikoi are a 6-piece reggae-soul-roots group based in Petone; much of the recording of their self-titled debut album took place in a remote boatshed in Petone’s Hikoikoi Reserve, on the shores of the Heretaunga River, and the band took their name from that magic spot. The album follows a hugely successful summer of shows, including The Parihaka Peace Festival, The Festival Of Cultures and Music In Parks and touring alongside the likes of The Black Seeds and Cornerstone Roots. The Septembers are set to release first single If You Want It To from their debut album ‘Edge of the World’, and the black and white video, shot by Fish n’Clips and directed by Guy Tichborne, will be previewed at a special single release gig at Tabac Bar in Auckland on June 18. Meanwhile ‘Edge of the World’ was made Album of the Week at Kiwi FM and the band will be back on the road soon for winter touring.

Two years in the making, and four years since ‘Based On A True Story’ was unleashed on the world, Fat Freddy’s Drop shake loose with their long-awaited studio album ‘Dr Boondigga & The Big BW’, spanning soul, dub, funk, jazz, blues, country, reggae and techno flavours - reflecting the live jams and many fantastic voyages across Europe, UK and Australasia that are the inspiration for these recordings. ‘Based On A True Story’ sold 8 times platinum in New Zealand and is the highest selling release by a New Zealand artist here in the last 4 years; the album had the longest consecutive reign at #1 on the NZ charts by any NZ artist. ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’is also off to a flying start, repeating the instant #1 feat and shipping platinum in its first week. Ampflier.co.nz have named the new album their biggest release ever, physical or digital.

Breakin Wreckwordz is in full swing right now - Tourettes has a new album out, the Louie Knuxx E.P is out this month, Tyson Tyler and Jay Roacher are both ready to go, Red Eye Society and Usual Suspects have completed recording, and Cyphanetik’s album is almost in the bag too. Louie Knuxx has been a busy man since deporting himself to Australia, and his latest offering – ‘Drinkin Druggin Fightin Fukkin’ - is an 8 track E.P including features by Jay Roacher, Kid Sheelan, DTD, a remix by Yorel, and two all new songs from the forthcoming Cancer album. Cheese On Toast has released a 7” spilt single to celebrate 60 years since the first 7-inch was pressed in NZ; one side has a previously unreleased Tourettes song I Think Maybe I Miss You with art work by Misery, and the other side features Auckland band the Drab Doo Riffs. BWW has also just released a compilation of older material that has never officially been released for digital release only called ‘Breakin Wreckwordz B.C – Unreleased Tracks From The Bad Old Days’; the recordings are all from 2003-2004.

Auckland-based rapper PNC (the name comes from Palmerston North City, his hometown) follows his award-winning debut ‘Rookie Card’ with new album ‘The Bazooka Kid’, making a stylistic and musical leap – check out the synth-based beats which bring a retro ‘80s feel, and additional hooks and melodies. ‘The Bazooka Kid’ also features Che Fu, David Dallas, Tyra Hammond (Opensouls), Chong Nee and MZ.J.

New Telepathics centres on the music of producer, writer and multi-instrumentalist Darryn Harkness, who you may know from Spacecuit, the UK-based band Serafin, Braintree, From Scratch and Dead Flowers. 2009 marks the band’s 10th anniversary, and ‘Rudiments and Theory Of Silence’ is their brand new album – the 12th release on Harkness’ own label, Our Rekords. The band also includes the musical talents of Hugh Vicars (The Orb UK), Sandy Mill (SJD, Spacesuit), Alastair Deverick (The Hot Grits, The Shades), Matt Brennan (Cosmic Rays Of Death), Shannon Fraser and Oliver Emmitt (The Shades). The group have toured in more than 20 countries with performances at dozens of festivals, including Reading, Leeds and the Edinburgh Festivals. Harkness recently re-scored the F.W. Murnau classic Nosferatu and performed it extensively in cinemas throughout the UK, Germany and back in NZ at AK09. A writer, painter and experimental photographer, Harkness’ music has also featured on Outrageous Fortune and other local TV shows since his return to New Zealand from 9 years based in London, England and Weimar, Germany.

‘City In Exile’ is the hotly anticipated debut album from Auckland-based breakbeat/drum and bass dons Antiform; the album features some exciting collaborations with the likes of Tiki Taane, MC Twincam, Angelo Munro (Bleeders), Julia Deans and Agent Alvin, among others. Antiform formed in 2002, and they’ve gone from local festival CDs to the Hardcore Beats 3 compilation to a nomination for Best Breakthrough DJ at the UK Breakspoll 2008 awards – the first Kiwis ever to be nominated for this accolade. They’ve also gained support from influential producers such as The Freestylers, Freq Nasty, Screwface, Ctrl Z, The Autobots and Affinity, while Got To Be You ft Tiki was playlisted on BBC’s Radio One. In 2008 alone Antiform completed a hugely successful Australian tour and sold out all 3 of their ‘It’s Got To Be You’ EP release parties.

It’s been an exciting journey for The Checks since emerging from Auckland’s North Shore a few years ago. The band relocated to New Zealand after living in London for 18 months, following the release of their critically acclaimed 2007 debut ‘Hunting Whales’ which received great support from the NME. The Checks have garnered considerable recognition both at home and internationally, with achievements including requests from Oasis to open for them; touring Japan with The Hives; and being championed by Michael Stipe, who invited them to open REM’s NZ tour – personally introducing The Checks set each night. The last year has also seen them supporting The Killers and touring with Muse. Self-produced & recorded at The Lab with Jol Mullholland, the songwriting on their new album ‘Alice By The Moon’ has a more eclectic and varied sound than the rock n’ roll swagger of their debut.

Ode have been busily releasing a massive swag of eclectic local gems – such as David Bremner’s ‘Gung Ho: Virtuoso Works for Trombone’; Bremner has held the position of Principle Trombone of the NZSO since 2002. This CD features pieces specifically chosen by Gareth Farr, Chris Gendell, Anthony Ritchie, and Paul Creston, alongside 3 transcriptions by Mark Lawrence of Famous Lieder from Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms. Pianist Norman Meehan’s last album ‘Modigliani’ was a nominee in the 2008 New Zealand Jazz Awards, and this new album ‘Sun Moon Stars Rain’ is inspired by the poetry of e. e. cummings. Ode have also released ‘Four Hands/Four Feet’ by Max Kenworthy and Nicholas Grigsby; this album is a live recording on the historic organ of Dunedin Town Hall, featuring great organ works for 2 organists from Handel, Bach, Faure et al. And while Chris Priestley may be known as the founder of Java Jive and Atomic Café, he also has another side to his talents - being a major catalyst in the NZ folk scene, Chris decided it was time to make his own album of children’s songs. ‘Emile Bliss and Charlie Bean’ contains 17 tracks ranging from traditionals to Raffi’s Songs, through to NZ compositions including Hrini Melbourne’s Purerehua.

Still with Ode - the Calico Brothers broke into the music scene in 2008 with their debut EP ‘God Left Town’ - with great reviews, shows throughout New Zealand and the inclusion of the title track on the double-platinum selling Outrageous Fortune soundtrack, February 2009 found the band in the studio with a bag full of new songs and other things, and the result is new album ‘Tell it to the Sun’. Robin Wilson has appeared as a guest violinist with the Sydney Omega Ensemble, as soloist with the ARCO Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Chamber Orchestra, and plays with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra; Kemp English is one of New Zealand’s leading concert performers and is in much in demand as a collaborative pianist, solo organist and specialist fortepiano exponent. Since forming their duo five years ago, Robin Wilson and Kemp English have toured extensively throughout New Zealand and Australia, and their first two albums, ‘Melodie’ and ‘Soirée Musicale’ have met with widespread critical acclaim –‘Melodie’ was subsequently re-released by Universal Music on their flagship Decca label. The duo’s latest CD of Schubert’s violin sonatas – ‘Complete Sonatas for Violin & Piano‘ - is sure to join the other two discs and take its place in the Classical Charts.

88 keys, 5 pieces of drum and a set of vocal chords is all that is needed (as it turns out) to make a noise which if amplified to a deadly level, could be murderous. Puppy Killer Records 2009 introduces The MuderChord - this 2 piece drum and key special task force release ‘the Blunt Cut’ this June via Rhythmethod; you can catch them live at the Kings Arms June 27th with mates Tourettes, Shitripper and The Randoms for a release show of epic proportions.

On the Road

Collapsing Cities and Brand New Math are included in an impressive lineup for an all-ages show being presented by Savvy Promotions in association with the Creative People's Centre on Saturday July 25 at Auckland’s Ellen Melville Hall; also playing are Cut Off Your Hands, Bionic Pixie and Melbourne’s Oh Mercy. One of the biggest single day local metal shows to be held in New Zealand –the SocHMHRInc Metal Fest 2 – is all set to go at Auckland’s Transmission Room on June 27, with 25 bands including Sinate alongside Just One Fix, Legacy of Disorder, Bloodletting, Leader to Ruin, Set On End and 16 other bands from all around the North Island.
Powertool Records’ Indie Club has found a new home – it’s happening every Thursday at Live Bar (the old Oblivion Bar) at 68 Hobson St in the heart of Auckland City. Artists who would like to play are welcome to contact Andrew Maitai at Powertool. Tonight’s special guest (June 18) is singer/songwriter Ross Harper; also on the bill from last month's Kaleidoscope World are Audio Pilots and Heroes and Villains, plus new band Sidewinder. Entry is only $10 and includes a free CD.

Lydia Cole will play a series of main centre dates in June to support the release of her debut EP, ‘Love Will Find A Way’, recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead studio. The 21 year-old North Shore native has earned rave reviews for a number of recent summer festival appearances including Rhythm and Vines, Parachute and the Winery Tour; her live band for these dates (North Island only) features EP producer Nic Manders on keyboards, Jol Mulholland of Gasoline Cowboy and the Mots on guitar, Chip Matthews on bass (Anika Moa, Opensouls and more) and drummer Nick Gaffaney (Goldenhorse, Cairo Knife Fight etc).

dDub never stand still for long, and they’ve just announced their new round of gigs which are happening over the next few months, starting with a show at the Mangawhai Tavern this Friday June 12. Check out our tour listings for more information. Tiki Taane has a 23-date tour of Aotearoa lined up this July/August/September to celebrate the release of his forthcoming ‘FLUX’ remix album; the tour is a nice intimate one featuring Tiki and DJ Sambora (Shapeshifter, Peacekeepers) – and stay tuned to this newsletter find out more information about the album which is due out on July 6.

The Auckland, Manukau, North Shore and Waitakere city councils are putting the Super City idea to the test by working collectively to present the Matariki Festival through the Maori arts development scheme Toi Whenua. This year the Matariki Festival is being held in Auckland from June 24 to July 24 to celebrate the Maori New Year, and the festival will include Native Noise in concert at the Auckland Town Hall, tree plantings at Bastion Point, a sustainability symposium in Waitakere, craft workshops on the North Shore, cultural performance in Manukau and more. Headed by chart-topper Tiki and supported by a roots-reggae line-up of kiwi favourites Katchafire, Three Houses Down and Cornerstone Roots, Native Noise is a favourite every Matariki, selling out three years in a row. Tama Waipara’s extravaganza Sir Plus and the Requirements is also featured, running at the Telstra Clear Pacific Event Centre on July 15 and 16.

Atamira Maori in the City is a 3-day celebration of Maori creativity, enterprise and essence, featuring music, dance, art, carving, ta moko, craft stalls and food stalls – and to top it all off, it’s free. There’s a great musical lineup including Herbs, Nesian Mystik, Smashproof, House of Shem, King Kapisi and Teremoana Rapley, 1814, Cornerstone Roots, Tahuna Breaks and many more; it’s all happening at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland from July 3 – 5.

Hot on the heels of NZ Music Month, The Chills announced a one-off Auckland show to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their legendary single Pink Frost, which was recorded at The Lab studios in Auckland on 29 May 1982 with additional tracking and mixing in January 1984, the single finally seeing the light of day in June 1984. Fast forward to 2009: Martin Phillipps and the band decided that a special one-off show on June 12 in Auckland was a nice way to mark the anniversary. And The Pirongia Mountain Men had a few adventures on their road trip to the Paihia Country Rock festival in May. They played 3 sets at the festival, then a show at Russell, despite their lovingly named Bling Bling van running out of fuel on the way – however, after a few dramas, they finally made it safely to their next shows at Omapere and the final leg back in Paihia!
