Raewyn Hill a definite “Keeper”
FINDERS KEEPERS
A new work by Raewyn Hill, as part of the Christchurch Arts Festival
Christchurch Arts Festival is proud to announce the premiere of celebrated choreographer Raewyn Hill’s new work, Finders Keepers, playing from the 23rd to the 26th of July 2009.
The Yuen Po bird market is a meeting place set amongst skyscrapers, where dozens of men take their caged songbirds to socialise them, for the birds to learn each other’s song and to sing for their supper. The men sit watching and listening with adoration.
Finders Keepers looks at the intricacies of family relationships after a man brings a bird into the family home and explores that delicate and intimate balance in our lives between being the keeper or the kept, the lover or the loved.
Continuing to build her reputation as one of the foremost choreographers of her generation, Raewyn Hill was appointed to the artistic directorship of one of Australia’s most vibrant dance companies, Dancenorth.
Formally commencing this prestigious position in January 2010, Hill in the meantime is assembling the company’s 2010/2011 programs, putting to practice the extensive relationship-driven management style that stood out amongst the many applicants who vied for the coveted role.
“I am thrilled about my move to Townsville to work with Dancenorth,” Hill commented, “and working with a very competent management team as headed by Joanne Fisher. As with any change in Artistic Directorship there will be a transition period however I look forward to continuing to build the company’s reputation as Australia’s fastest growing dance company.”
Guy Boyce, Director of the Christchurch Arts Festival, praised Hill’s latest achievements: “Raewyn continues to develop a reputation as a leading light in contemporary dance, not just in New Zealand but across the Asia-Pacific region, as this appointment shows. She is at the very forefront of choreographers and we are delighted by both her appointment and to be presenting her latest work, Finders Keepers, in this year's Festival."
The Festival season of Finders Keepers represents another milestone in the presentation of contemporary dance in Christchurch. Across consecutive festivals, Christchurch has developed an audience for the art form allowing the presentation of work by the very best New Zealand and international choreographers.
