2009 Pacific Music Award Winners Announced

Nesian Mystik has cleaned up at the S3 Pacific Music awards for 2009.

Pacific music celebrates another bumper year with the boys from Nesian Mystik taking home four awards at the S3 (pron: ess-cubed) Pacific Music Awards 2009 announced tonight (May 23) in Manukau City.

At the star-studded event in celebration of Pacific music, Nesian Mystik is honoured with the Nui FM Best Pacific Urban Artist Award, the Radio 531pi Best Pacific Group Award and the coveted Tui for the S3 Best Pacific Music Album for ‘Elevator Musiq’

The band also takes home the APRA Best Song Award for the single ‘Nesian 101’.

To acknowledge the band’s S3 Best Pacific Music Album win, Nesian Mystik will also be honoured at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards in October.

Well-known female hip hop and R’n’B artist, Ladi 6 takes out the award for Pacific Blue Best Pacific Female Artist for her debut solo album ‘Time is not Much’

Other winners at the S3 Pacific Music Awards 2009 are:
• Devolo picks up the award for NZ Commission Best Pacific Male Artist for ‘Heaven & Hell’
• Best Pacific Gospel Album is awarded to Oyster Music – various artists for ‘The Gospel According to….’
• The Manukau Institute of Technology Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Tigilau Ness
• The Phillip Fuemana Award goes to the group 'Sweet & Irie'
• The Manukau City Council People’s Choice Award goes to the South Auckland Community Church Band

Also acknowledged for his outstanding achievements and success in the music industry internationally was Savage for his hit single ‘Swing’.

Pacific Music Awards chairperson Rev Mua Strickson-Pua says that once again, the award winners of the 2009 S3 Pacific Music Awards truly highlight the success and achievements of Pacific music artists within the industry. During these hard economic times it’s great to be able to celebrate something as uplifting and positive as Pacific music.

Campbell Smith, CEO of RIANZ, believes Nesian Mystik are a worthy recipient of the Tui for Best Pacific Album. “Nesian Mystik is a great New Zealand music success story and we’re looking forward to honouring them at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards in October.”

Tigilau Ness was honoured by being the recipient of the Manukau Institute of Technology Life Time Achievement Award. Rev Mua Strickson-Pua described Tigilau, whose son is music award-winning artist Che Fu, as a truly humble Pacific musician who has contributed over thirty years of music for all people, which deeply expresses his love of the Pacific and humanity. There was a special tribute performance on the night of a Tigilau Ness song sung by his son, Che Fu, with his band The Krates.

The fifth annual Pacific Music Awards were held at Manukau City’s TelstraClear Pacific venue and celebrate Pacific music and artists.
The audience was treated to dynamic live performances by rising Pacific artists and established music stars including You Alone Chorus (gospel choir), Annonymouz, Angela Afeaki, Illegal Musik - Ill Semantics, J Williams, P.Money, Vince Harder, PNC, Scribe and David Dallas, Nesian Mystik - featuring Cydel and Che Fu.
