CENTRAL JUNE 2009 PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
AUCKLAND, Friday 23rd May, 2009 – Comedy Central New Zealand this month introduces the talents of Demetri Martin. With roles in Flight of the Conchords and as a correspondent on The Daily Show, Martin is one of the brightest and fastest-rising stars of American comedy. His blend of cheerful naivety and cutting pop-culture observations comes exclusively to New Zealand via Comedy Central NZ with his special Demetri Martin. Person. Adding a local angle, our latest Hollywood export – the comic best known as Murray - steals the stage in his stand-up special Rhys Darby: Imagine That. Adding to this, the Montreal comedy institution Just For Laughs delivers yet more legends of laughs, and a cluster of comedic movies rounds out the funny for June.
DemetriMartin won the prestigious Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and hasn’t looked back. Since that 2003 award he has worked as a writer for The Late Show with Conan O’Brien, starred as a keytar player in Flight of the Conchords and been the clueless “youth trends” correspondent for The Daily Show. His one-hour special, Demetri Martin. Person. sees Martin riff and draw diagrams on all matter of important subjects – including "The Cuteness of a Girl vs. How Interested I Am in Hearing About How Intuitive Her Cat Is.” Comedy Central NZ is also excited to announce that Martin’s new television show Important Things with Demetri Martin will have its exclusive New Zealand premiere in July.
Rhys Darby may be best-known as the copper-haired manager Murray from Flight of the Conchords, but his stand-up comedy is a hit in its own right. Filmed at the El Rey theatre in Los Angeles, Rhys Darby: Imagine That sees Darby explain the appeal of bumper cars at Rainbow’s End to his American audience and showcases his formidable talent for physical comedy and sound effects. Darby’s appearance this month is complemented by Ben Hurley’s interstitial vox pops -marking the start of Comedy Central New Zealand’s push to spotlight local comics.
